Opal Essence 2-day Retreat with Lorena Uriarte from Sydney, AU

Opal Essence is a tumbling block quilt with a twist! This pattern looks great with all styles of fabric: solids and prints, traditional and modern. Have fun playing with color and value to create movement and depth. The big pieces are great for showing off the larger prints in your stash. In this class you will learn how to machine piece curves, hand appliqué smooth circles and construct y-seams with confidence. Lorena will also teach a hand pieced mini version of the pattern using English paper piecing.

Your sewing machine is one way to take this class, as several piecing techniques will be taught. If you prefer to only hand piece/EPP, you don't need to bring a sewing machine.

2 Day Retreat at Sag Harbor Inn

Sag Harbor, NY March 2-3, 2024 (with opening remarks at 5:30pm March 1st)

Retreat includes:

Arrive Friday March 1, between 3-5 pm,...opening remarks at 5:30 pm

Class starts Saturday morning at 9am 

Saturday 9am-4pm  (students can continue to sew until 9pm on their own)

Sunday 9am-4pm

Lunches Saturday & Sunday (included with class) 12-1pm

Not included:

Acrylic Template Set (purchased in class): $35  ( or EPP option: papers kit $15)

Bring all your basic sewing equipment: Fabrics, Sewing machine*, small iron, Small cutting mat & 28mm rotary cutter, hand sewing needle, thread, pins (see class supply list).

Dinners and Breakfast is on your own (note: breakfasts are included with Sag Harbor Inn hotel stay)

Accommodations must be booked separately. A preferred rate at Sag Harbor Inn (workshop location) 45 W. Water St., Sag Harbor, NY is available.

* If you will only be hand piecing/EPP, you don't need to bring a sewing machine.

A limited number of Juki sewing machines are available for the workshop for an additional rental fee ($75)…please contact info@vfwquilts.com.

Class cancellation policy: If you need to cancel up to 30 days before workshop, the class fee will be refunded, minus a $75 fee. If cancellation is made within 30 days, no refund will be given unless we are able to fill your spot. If your spot can be filled, the class fee minus $150 will be refunded at that time. 

Hotel:

Rooms are available for single or double occupancy at the workshop location, Sag Harbor Inn.

Preferred rates: Poolside:$219 per night per room; Harbor: $239 per night per room.

Transportation From NYC to Sag Harbor:

Hampton Jitney: hamptonjitney.com

The Hampton Jitney (or Ambassador) picks up in NYC and drops off in Sag Harbor. It’s easiest and convenient for NYC students coming out. (Fares are $40-$70 each way depending on which bus and time of day. The Ambassador lets you select your seats and costs more… ) It is a ten minute walk from the Jitney bus stop to the Sag Harbor Inn. We can have someone pick you up and drive you over with your baggage.

Long Island Railroad: https://new.mta.info on the “Montauk branch” to East Hampton (can use Uber for the 16 minute ride to Sag Harbor Inn.)

Flying to NY: You can either fly to LaGuardia and Uber to the Jitney “airport connection” to take the Jitney bus right out to Sag Harbor!  Or, you can fly to MacArthur airport (Southwest, American, Breeze and Frontier) on Long Island-Islip and rent a car…  For more specific questions or details, email info@vfwquilts.com.

About Lorena:

Lorena Uriarte is a Sydney-based, internationally award-winning pattern designer and modern maker of quilts and quilt coats.

 With significant experience in education and hospitality, Lorena is passionate about teaching patchwork and quilting. She teaches regularly in Sydney, regional NSW, and interstate and internationally. 

 Lorena’s quilts have been exhibited at the Modern Quilt Guild’s international show QUILTCON and in galleries across Australia. She was Guest Artist at this year’s Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair.
