Nancy Zieman - A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Friends

Nancy Zieman was one special woman.
She is and was the nicest person I ever met.
She was so caring, supportive, encouraging and always so helpful and kind.
I was honored to work with her as a board member of the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts, and on her Sewing With Nancy Show.
I was saddened to get final emails from her in hospice.
But I was filled with strength and joy when those emails from her,
were still filled with the utmost of grace, love and strength on her final journey.
I hold her as a beacon, that I may follow that path in my own life until the end.
Nancy's show ran for 35 years on Public Television.  She built an amazing business, had many tough circumstances of health, and lived her life with a joyful passion I hope I can find in my life. If you haven't read her autobiography Seams Unlikely, I highly recommend it.
In this new Memoir, Richard Zieman, Nancy's husband, shares an intimate look into life with his beloved wife of 40 years. Just like all of us, at times Nancy endured seemingly impossible circumstances and challenges. Richard shares insights into being a caregiver, and the blessings of support from family and close friends, during the almost four months Nancy was in Hospice care. Readers learn the physical battles Nancy faced, especially during the last five years of her life, while always retaining her faith and rising above it all.
We are supporting Richard as he shares info about Nancy's life and faith.  This is woman to live up to, and be inspired by.  We hope you will join us on this blog tour and help in celebrating her life.
You can read more here.

It is so inspiring to read what a good, devoted friend she was to so many—writing to them from hospice, for example. The love her friends have for her shines through each blog post and is touching to read. Thank you for sharing such sweet remembrances.

Nancy inspired me to sew about 24 years ago. I sewed a crib set and other things for my first born. I learned some basic machine sewing skills from her. I wish over the years I could have watched her show, but we don’t have tv.

It’s hard to believe that Nancy left us way too soon in life. She was such an inspiration to quilters like me and gave me enthusiasm to keep sewing quilts. Sounds like she had a perfect partnership with her husband which I am sure he greatly misses but will hold her forever in his heart.

I received a sewing book in my 20s from my Mother for Christmas. It was by Nancy. Many years later I gifted that book to my daughter. She’s now learning to sew from Nancy too. I watched Nancy and learned so much. I was crushed as most were when she passed. Thank you Nancy for all the years of sharing you gave us.

I have been watching Sewing with Nancy probably from her first shows. I learned so much from her. She was a consummate teacher and I still have about 20 hours of her videos I taped on my VCR. Of course, I don’t have a machine to play them on, but still glad to have them.😊

Nancy introduced me to quilting in 2012, and the first quilt I made was one she featured on her PBS show. She was such an inspiration, with her gracious generosity, encouragement, and compassion, and, in fact, she continues to inspire, through her PBS show, the fond recollections shared here, and this book by her husband. I am grateful for her enduring legacy.

I’ve watched Nancy’s sewing and quilting programs for many years! She was a wonderful and knowledgeable teacher. I learned so many useful sewing techniques from her. I was saddened to learn of her illness and subsequent death to cancer last year. In 2016, I lost a dear, sweet sister to cancer as well. She too, was a wonderful, talented sewer and quilter! I read both Nancy’s autobiography, as well as her husband’s tribute. Nancy was an amazing woman!

Nancy was the best friend I have never had the fortune to meet. I will miss her on TV for the rest of my life. I have been her friend for the entire time she hosted her show and I continue to read and purchase from her catalog. Her family I’m sure is devastated and will miss her forever. She was a beacon. Her warm smile made my day. She made learning techniques easy and fun. I personally lost a friend I will only know from television, but I know she was the best and how wonderful that you got to spend time with her and know her! 🤗

You were so fortunate to know her personally, Victoria. I remember watching her show on KTCA in the Twin Cities. She was a truly giftd quilter and had so much sewing knowledge. It is amazing that she accomplished so much amidst some often challenging times. It is sad that she passed so young. I must read the book, The Rest of the Story, written by her husband. It would be lovely to win a copy. Thanks for sharing.

Very few days go by when I am not reminded of my love of watching the Sewing with Nancy shows. With my home in Tennessee, it is virtually impossible to have an opportunity to visit the Beaver Dam area, but she seemed to be so approachable that it felt as if she was a good friend. She is the most innovative person to ever sit down behind a sewing machine. Her TV show set the bar that all other sewing themed TV programs strive to reach. She continues to be an inspiration as a sewer, mother, wife and Christian. She is truly missed.

I was saddened to hear of Nancy Ziemans passing. I grew up watching the Sewing with Nancy show on our local Public Television Station. Nancy was truly a pioneer in the sewing arts and she developed countless methods, tools and techniques to aid viewers in all areas of sewing. By watching Nancy execute complicated sewing techniques and her patient guidance and a lot of practice, I’ve become the seamstress I’ve always dreamed about. I can sew chiffon, cotton, leather and anything my sewing machine will go through. Nancy was a gifted and generous leader in the sewing industry, touching lives everywhere, sharing her knowledge and love of sewing. May her spirit continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all sewing enthusiasts. Share your gifts and knowledge with others – be an inspiration – help others. May needle and thread be what binds your friendships. God bless you.

I have watched “Sewing With Nancy” for years. She was a beautiful person and a very talented sewer; I so admired her for that. I learned a lot of easier ways (or right ways} to do things than I was used to doing on my own. I taught my granddaughter to sew and while we were sewing on Saturdays we didn’t get much done while Nancy was on. We both loved her ideas and some of the fabrics she would put together that we would have never thought of; and remaking sweatshirts WOW! Even my husband would watch-he would tell me “your sewing show is on” if I wasn’t in the room. He also would ask me “could you make that”? Or “why don’t you make something like that”? Nancy even got me interested in quilts. My husband passed away suddenly in August of last year; and when I saw that Nancy had passed (although I never met her) I had another loss. She was a good friend on television; someone my husband and I watched and enjoyed together. She is surely missed. And to Richard and the family my heart goes out to you I feel your loss! May God be with you and guide you through your grief. Nancy was loved by lots of viewers too!

When I first started quilting almost mid 1970s there was no quilt shop and hard to find someone to help me learn. Quilting was something done in the 1930s and earlier and then women went to work during the war and quilting fell by the wayside till revival about the time I started or tried to start. I depended on Nancy on PBS with her sewing/quilting to learn a whole lot. I continued through the years to watch her shows and deeply appreciate what she did for sewing/quilting. I couldn’t find anyone to help me or show me things and she filled the spot till eventually the shops/books/classes began showing up. I am very sorry for the loss of her and STILL watch her programs on my PBS station. Rip Nancy and thank you so much.
